I would find it a waste, if flowers get chucked in a corner upon receiving it. Not only will the flowers wilt faster than they should, you don’t get to appreciate the beauty of it for a longer period.
So, if you’ve just received a bouquet and don’t want to see that happen, then you can try the following tips to ensure your blooms last longer. (Don’t be lazy!)
- First, if your flowers are wrapped up, gently unwrap them and remove the cotton buds (if any) at the bottom of the bouquet and ensure they are clean.
- Then, find a vase. It can be a water bottle or even in a form of a old wine bottle.
- Ensure when filling the vase up with water, make sure the cut stems are covered by 7-10cm of water
- Add water daily and check your water levels regularly
- Ensure they aren’t placed in warm environments and avoid direct sunlight. Warm temperatures cause the flowers to wilt a lot faster
- Add flower food into your water. If you don’t want to buy, you can diy them using either of the following methods:
- Offer some soda to your plants
- Pour about 1/4 cup of soda into the vase of cut flowers.
- The sugar in the soda will make the blooms last longer.
- If you find coke and pepsi’s colour too distractive, you can use clear soda like sprite / 7up.
- Offering Apple Cider vinegar
- Mixing 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 table spoons of sugar with the water in the vase.
- Mix it well before placing your flowers in the vase. Change the water every 2-3 days.
- Sugar and white vinegar
- You can mix 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar for every litre of warm water.
- Offer some soda to your plants
In case you’re wondering, the sugar element nourishes the plants while the vinegar element inhibits bacterial growth. .
